Taty et al 2023: Spationtemporal dynamics of cholera in the DRC

I have just read Taty et al (2023): "Spatiotemporal dynamics of cholera in the Democratic Republic of the Congo before and during the implementation of the Multisectoral Cholera Elimination Plan: a cross-sectional study from 2000 to 2021".

In this very interesting paper, the authors assess the spatiotemporal dynamics of cholera over the recent 22 years to determine the impact of MCEPs (Multisectoral Cholera Elimination Plans) in the DRC on cholera epidemics. They also establish lessons learnt and make very interesting suggestions for improving the implementation of the next MCEP in the DRC.

As a pathogen genomics person, I was interested that the authors say that genomics could be useful in elucidating cholera spread in the DRC:
"...phylogenetic studies of Vibrio cholerae strains circulating in the DRC should be conducted to clearly monitor the profiles and origins of Vibrio cholerae strains in each health zone (persisting bacterial populations vs. multiple re-introductions), establish the links and transmission pathways between separate outbreaks, and better understand the current disease dynamics. Such insight would further bolster cholera elimination strategies in the country".

Food for thought...
